Oil slicks caused by oil tanker accidents and the dumping of rubbish resulting from the routine operations of ships and from illegal activities, such as releasing into the sea the oil residue from bilges or oil sediments from the tank, are major sources of pollution from hydrocarbons in our oceans.

"Oil" means petroleum in any form including crude oil, fuel oil, sludge, oil refuse and refined products.

Watch for bearing discoloration, which may indicate heat damage or deposits from dirty oil. Dirt deposits often develop on the non-loaded areas of the bearing face. Oil residue also sometimes collects on the bearing back in those areas where there is poor contact between the back and the bore. The bearing backs and the bores will indicate whether there has been motion or slipping.
